Steve, along with wife Michelle, established Smart Financial in October 2008. He has nearly 20 years’ experience in the profession, having been a Partner and Managing Director at previous firms and is a Chartered and Certified Financial Planner (CFP), a holder of the Investment Management Certificate and a former Assessor of the CFP licence.

Steve is an active member of the Manchester branch of the IFP, holding the position of Chair from 2009 until 2014. He is also regularly asked to speak at other IFP branch meetings around the country and sits on the Financial and Legal Sector Panel. Steve is also a regular contributor to a wide range of feature articles on financial and money management related subjects across trade, local and national press.

Steve is married to Michelle and they have two boys, he is a keen golfer, an Ironman triathlete and is a committed fund raiser for the Cystic Fibrosis trust. Steve’s next target is to run a sub-3 hour marathon which he hopes to achieve in 2018.

As the needs of the business' clients changed, Steve established Smart Trustee Services Limited in 2011.

Steve also leads Financial Planning Training Academy, a specialist training business set up to train financial advisers to become accomplished Financial Planners.

Michelle Martin - Director

Michelle established Smart Financial alongside husband Steve in October 2008. She is the Head of Finance and is the principal point of contact for Smart SSAS.

Michelle holds an honours degree in International Management and Spanish. Having joined Shell Chemical’s graduate scheme in 1999 she progressed to an account management role before leaving to take up a management position with Albion Chemicals. In 2007 Michelle joined Steve at their previous firm before setting up Smart in 2008.

Michelle is married to Steve and mum to their two boys, Charlie and Harry. In her spare time she enjoys keeping fit, travel and the sunshine! She is a keen fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Tamsin Caine MSc., CFPTM – Head of Financial Planning

Tamsin heads our client-facing team, with responsibility for looking after a large section of our valuable client base, forging close working relationships with many of our professional business partners and business strategy. She also heads our Investment Committee. Tamsin is a trainer for the Financial Planning Training Academy and mentors a number of other financial planners, being dedicated to improving standards within the profession.

She has a strong background of over 15 years within the financial services profession and is exceptionally well qualified being a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Planner and a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society. Tamsin has completed a Masters in Business Management & Financial Planning at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she is also an associate lecturer.

Tamsin is mum to two children, Charlie and Zoe. When she's not at work, Tamsin enjoys running, baking and rugby. She is a Sale Sharks supporter and is membership secretary of Sale FC Rugby Club, where she previously coached.

Ashley has recently graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University having studied Business Economics with a year placement. Ashley will spend the next couple of years providing support to the advisory team, whilst studying to become a qualified financial planner.

Out of work Ashley enjoys football, rugby and skiing. Ashley intends to do some coaching in the future. As well as sport Ashley is a keen cook.

Ashley has a great focus on detail and strives to provide our clients with quality service.



Gemma Alp
Client Experience Executive

Gemma has spent 10 years in Financial Services working for providers and Financial Advisers. Gemma is currently studying towards her Diploma and Mortgage advice qualifications, with a view to working as an independent IFA and mortgage adviser.
Outside work, Gemma has 3 children. Gemma takes part in powerlifting/strength training 4-6 days per week with the aim of competing later this year. Gemma is a qualified physio therapist specialising in strength training. Until recently, Gemma ran an online coaching business but gave this up to focus on her adviser training.
